Fahrenheit #5: Entire Book Questions #2 (Spoilers!)

Directions:  If you would like to respond to this prompt as one of your blog posts, you need to give a detailed, text-oriented response to at least three of the questions below.  Be sure to number them.  Remember, you may also respond and build on others’ comments.

1.      Montag turns to books to rescue him; instead they help demolish his life -- he loses his wife, job and home; he kills a man and is forced to be a nomad. Does he gain any benefits from books? If so, what are they?
2.      Do you believe, as Montag did, that Beatty wanted to die? If so, why do you think so?
3.      Since the government is so opposed to readers, thinkers, walkers, and slow drivers, why does it allow the procession of men along the railroad tracks to exist?
4.      Once Montag becomes a violent revolutionary, why does the government purposely capture an innocent man in his place instead of tracking down the real Montag? Might the government believe that Montag is no longer a threat?
5.   What does Granger mean when he says, "We're going to go build a mirror factory first and put out nothing but mirrors for the next year and take a long time to look at them?" Why would "mirrors" be important in this new society? (Note: In Part 1, Clarisse is said to be "like a mirror.")

  1. 1.) He mainly gains true, and reality because it tells him what really goes on in life and he gets to live where ever he wants because of him being a nomad. He also has to be conscious because of the hound is chasing him to kill him. But I really believe that if he doesn’t read books he will lose the fact of reality and go into something that is false and get into more trouble because his assumptions where wrong.
2.) Because that he owned books himself and he has read books so he had a reason to die because he tells people all the time that they can’t read books based on the rules. But he has read books and owns them, so he felt as he should be punished for his own doings.
3.) Because if they didn’t we would have never have know where Montag got some of his fire obsessions, and some of his beliefs. They exist to show the reality of the fact that homeless people know a lot more than we think.
4.) They where just wanting to set peace back into the country they lived in. they were just hiding something else from the world. But I also believe that he wasn’t much of a threat if they just left him alone.

  2. 1. Montag gains the knowledge of reality and realizes what he really wants to do with his life. He also realizes he doesn’t need his wife, who has probably been changed by her "family".

    2. I believe Beatty wanted to die, because he didnt defend him self. He probably felt gulty about having books and saying he read them before the law was inforced, when no one really knew it that was true or not.

    4. I believe the government captured an innocent man, because they knew the probability of catching Montag was low, and wanted citizens to know that the law will be in forced if needed. I think the government thought that Montag would be so scared that they would not consider him a treat.

  3. Angela i really like your response to the second question, because him being a fireman has broken the law by reading books, even though he says it was in the past.

  4. 1.) Monatg gained truth and reality from reading books, yes it came with a lot of consequences but it helped him realize what he wanted. He was blinded his whole life with his wife and his job. Reading books gave him a new outlook in life.

2.)Yes, Beatty wanted to die because he read and kept books himself. He told everyone else that reading books and keeping books was bad. Having books himself made him feel guilty. So he felt like he had betrayed society and therefore he wanted to die.

3.)I think that the government killed another man because they wanted to send a message to not only Montag but to society as well. I think they wanted to let people know that if they read books, they would be killed. I believe that Montag was never a threat, he just wanted to realize the reality of life and read books.

  5. I agree with Jorge and Angela's answer because Beatty went against the law and he felt guilty for a reason

  6. 1. Montag gains the benefit of knowing how wrong his life had been. Up until Clarisse and the books, Guy was going through the motions of a life he didn't care about. Even though many things happened after that, I think it was all worth it for him in the end.
2.Beatty was a criminal, and he knew it. He had many books stashed away, and I think thats what was eating away at him. He didn't stop himself from being killed, because he felt guilty for living a life of lies.
    4. The government knew that Guy's escape might cause some people to think. They didn't want that, so they arrested a man and accused him of being Guy. He was a scapegoat, it made things easier.

I agree with what she said completely. Just saying.

  8. 1.Even though Montag kills a man, loses his job, wife, and home I think he definitely gains benefits from the books. A benefit that he got is that he finally realized that he wasn’t happy with the way he was living. He saw so much ignorance around him do to the lack of books and it pissed him off so at least he changed in a way that he realized books were important.
2.I, like Montag, believe that Beatty did want to die because he didn’t even try to save himself when Montag burned him with the flamethrower. The main reason why I think he wanted to die is because he felt guilt since everyday he would see people lose everything and even get arrested for owning books, but he knew he owned many of them too so he felt as he should pay and unfortunately it was with his life.
3.The government allows the procession of men along the railroad tracks to exist because they don’t think they are a threat. For all they know, it’s a whole bunch of hippies that don’t have a home and therefore sleep in the outside, but what they don’t know is that they are the rebirth of a new society.
4.The government purposely captures an innocent man in his place instead of tracking down the real Montag because they don’t want people to know that the real Montag got away. Its not that they don’t think he is a threat but instead It wouldn’t look good knowing that a killer can outrun a mechanical dog and cheat the whole government, so the first chance they get, they kill an innocent man who decided to go for a walk at the wrong time.
5.When Granger says, "We're going to go build a mirror factory first and put out nothing but mirrors for the next year and take a long time to look at them", he means that the first thing they are going to do with the new society is to make them realize what they had been doing wrong. Mirrors are symbols to show that they need to look at themselves and all the things they did wrong before starting all over again. Clarisse is said to be like a mirror because she is the image of what’s right unlike Mildred. That’s probably why she is said to be a mirror in the first chapters.

  9. Elizabeth I really like your response to question #1 because that's exactly the way I see Montag. Sometimes when you don't want to do something by choice you just go with the motions and that's exactly how Montag is living his life before books come in. Great response.
