Censorship Reflection

Directions:  If you would like to respond to this prompt as one of your blog posts, you need to answer all questions below.

  1. List ten books you have read.  If you can’t think of ten, list books you have either heard about or seen the movie version.
  2. Look at your list of ten books.  Write down any reason you think people might want to ban or censor each work.  Reasons could include (but are not limited to) social, political, or religious content, profanity, sexual situations or identities, or violence.
  3. Are there any authors you can think of that have never had their books banned?  Explain your reasoning (hint:  you have all read something by this author in school).
  4. How would life be different if there were no books? Would things be better or worse? Why? Would life be easier or harder? Why? Would your life change? How?  Respond in 5-7 thoughtful sentences.

  2. 1.)Harry Potter, Twilight, Vampire Academy: Spirit Bound, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, The Cronicals Of Narnia, The Outsiders, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Eragon, Spiderwick, The Visitor.

2.)These books are all mainly fictional, all but The Outsiders and To Kill A Mocking Bird. They were based off of a true story. To Kill A Mocking Bird would be banded for using the racial term brought upon a black person. The Outsiders would be banned for foul language, racial terms, and gang affiliation.

3.)Truly off the top of my head i could not name any authors that haven't had a banned book. Other than Dr.Suse

4.)Life would be hard for my case, because how would we under stand things? How would we cook? What would happen to story's. Nothing would be interesting. For books don't always have to tell us story's that's why we have picture books and such.

  3. 1) Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Chronicals of Narnia, Harry Potter, Warriors Saga, Island of the Blue Dolphins, His Dark Materials Trilogy,The Upstairs Room.
    2) A reason that someone would want to ban His Dark Materials Trilogy would be religious because tha entire trilogy is about overthrowing God.
    3) Of the books that I have read, i would have to say that the Warriors Series would not be banned because there really isn't anything that would upset anyone.
    4) For me life ould seem to be a lot harder than it is now because for me drama nd reading are one of, if no the only, things that I can do o that I can forget all of my worries. Without books... drama would be very stressful even though it's one of the things that relieves stress for me; drama has its on stresses.

  5. 1.To Kill a Mockingbird, Twilight Saga, Harry Potter, The Pact, The Great Gatsby, Vanishing Acts, The Tenth Circle, Salem Falls, Stiff, A Streetcar Named Desire.
2.In To Kill a Mockingbird, I think someone might want to ban it because it has a lot of racism in it, religious content, and it talks about abuse both sexual and nonsexual. Twilight could possibly want to be banned because of religious believes and parents might think their kids would want to join a cult after reading it, also because there is some violence in it. I think the same goes for Harry Potter. The Great Gatsby has a few minor violence issues and some parents might be concerned that some of the characters are bad influences on their children. The Pact might be censored or banned due to the fact that the story is based on a suicide of a young girl and because half the story’s plot is in a prison. In Vanishing Acts, it might be banned also due to religious beliefs because there are a lot of Native American spirituals throughout the story. The Tenth Circle, like to Kill a Mockingbird, has rape in it so that might lead it to be banned or censored. Salem Falls could be banned due to religious views and not wanting to expose children to witch trials and such. A Streetcar Named Desire could also be banned for abuse related reasons.
3.I don’t think Jodi Picoult has had any of her stories banned. I’ve read a lot by her and there are some minor details that might need to be censored but nothing too major.
4.If there were no books, a lot of people would be dumb and bored. Things would be worse because books help us learn and understand things. They also are entertaining and more educating than watching a TV show. I think life would be harder, school especially because we wouldn’t necessarily have a reference other than the internet which isn’t always exact. My life would definitely change. I read every night before I go to sleep. Without books, I’d probably just end up watching TV or doing something not as cool.

  6. 1. Harry Potter, The spider wick chronicles the chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the rings, Star wars, to kill a mocking bird, Aragon, Twilight, of mice and Men, The great Gatsby, A streetcar named desire.

    2. In Of mice and men they use profanity and racist remarks. It’s a book that is written in that time period but some might find it a bit racist. As well as in to kill a mocking bird it uses racist remarks and profanity. As far as the others I don’t see a reason they would need to be censored or banned.

    3. A lot of authors end up getting banned but most of the books I have read do not have authors that were banned. Even books in school have been banned at some point but we end up reading them because they are important to know about.

    4. Life without books would be pretty boring and people would be less intelligent. In today’s society you wouldn’t think that books have a big impact on our lives, because it is a world driven by electronics and movies. Almost every book that is published is followed by a movie of the published work. I am not a big reader but I know enough to realize that books are really important in a healthy society. Life without books wouldn’t necessarily be easier or harder, but it would be a difference we could see. It would have enough of an impact to effect some parts of our lives but the world wouldn’t seize to exist.

  7. 1) Harry Potter, Dark Tower Series, Ranger's Apprentice, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Artemis Fowl series, Outlaws of Moonshadow Marsh series, Magyk series, Pet Sematary, It

    2) Some - not all, but some - of these books might be banned for having sexually explicit or violent situations, or perhaps for racism.

    3) Kate Chopin

    4) Things would be a lot worse. Without books, we lose one of our main ways to pass our knowledge to future generations.

  8. 1. wayside school gets a little stranger, holes, a child called it,hunted connecticut, ghost stories and legends of southwestern connecticut, freak the mighty, the great gatsby, streetcar named desire, of mice and men, the outsiders.

    2. some of these books have violent acts throughout the storie. Also, some of the stories are too fake and readers who stay home all the time might misinterpret the outside world.

    3. well the truth is, im not the greatest fan of books.Reason why i wouldnt know the answer to the question.

    4. I bilieve life would change for most of us, since the knowledge written by others wouldnt be shared to everyone. Even though not all books are important there are some needed in our life.

  9. 1)Ten books I have read are A child called It, Of Mice and Men, Among the Hidden, Among the Impostors, Among the Barons, Among the Betrayed, Among the Free, Among the Brave, Among the Enemy, and Running out of Time.

2)To be honest I can’t think of a reason why someone would want to ban the book A child called it. This book helps people realized the abuse that is going on in everyday families, without encouraging violence. Of Mice and Men would definitely be banned because the “N” word is used a lot and a character with a mental disability is killed for being himself. A reason why someone would want to ban the Shadow Children series is because it’s a dystopia and it has anarchy like things.

3)Margaret Haddix has never had her books banned. I think this is because her books are fiction and her “shadow” characters don’t hurt or encourage anyone to become like them.

4)I agree with you Toby because most people now days think that reading is boring and they prefer doing other things, I’m not a big reader either, but like you, I know that books are important to pass our knowledge to future generations because what will we do if technology seize to exist? How would we learn about our culture without the internet? To answer the prompt, life would definitely be different if there were no books because we use them to keep alive many things like cultures. Life would be worst because we wouldn’t be able to gain the knowledge that only books can provide. My life would definitely change because sometimes I read books to relax and release some stress and without them I would probably become a video game freak.

  10. I really liked what Toby said about the third question. Because its true that we need to read some banned books because some information in them is good to know at some points. But I don’t really think that all books have things we need to know, or that is good to read. Some books are fictional and are nothing to the point of being realistic. Yet at the same time they are fun to read and people have a care for them. I think that if people would read things that were more technological or something that has to consist of constructional businesses, then thing would be better built and safety percentage would be higher. I think you have done a great job on your comments because I believe you are getting a very good understanding of the book.

  11. Miguel I'm glad you are making a good effort in writing so much and understanding the novel Fahrenheit 451. I really like how you at least know an author who's books haven't been banned. cause off the top of my head I don't know any so good job at what you are doing and keep up the good work.

  12. 1.) Ten books I have read are The Book of Basketball, Of Mice and Men, Street Car Named Desire, Scarlett Letter, Harry potter, Diary of Anne Frank, Holes, The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin, Adventures of Tom Sawyer,

2.)I think people would ban books like Of Mice and Men and The Diary of Anne Frank because of the violent moments that the books have. People might actually ban The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin also because a white kid is hanging out with a colored kid in the book. People who are racist might not like that.

3.)I honestly can’t think of any authors who have been banned, I am not very familiar with a lot of authors.

4.) If books didn’t exist I think a lot of people would actually be happy because people don’t like to read very much. There are also downfalls to that though. If books didn’t exist people wouldn’t be as educated, they wouldn’t know how to read or write properly. As much as reading sucks sometimes, reading expands the human brain, your grammar and helps your vocabulary become richer.

    2. they might want to banned this books because if the imagination of other people and what this books would mean to them and the ideas that they would get and they might become more educated.
    3. they were probably banned because of the opinions that they portrayed in their books were too strong for the public
    4. it would be worst because books is the major source of wisdom because when people read books they get ideas for new topics and books the books are the main sources of ideas.

  14. Ethan Reber, I agree with what you said on question 2, some of these books do have racist remarks, and sexual profanity. I am really surprised that a lot of these books aren’t banned from certain age groups.
